Steven Spielberg's blockbuster that devoured box offices in 1975, JAWS, finally surfaces in high-definition August 14th when a newly restored and digitally remastered edition lands on Blu-ray disc in celebration of Universal's 100th Anniversary. The JAWS Blu-ray Combo Pack includes the feature film on hi-def Blu-ray and DVD discs plus Digital Copy and UltraViolet versions for viewing at the beach on your portable devices with fully restored picture and 7.1 surround sound.
Shaping pop culture and practically inventing the idea of the summer blockbuster, JAWS stars Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw as a trio of complexly motivated characters who must hunt down a great white shark killing swimmers off the beaches of Amity Island. Producers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown purchased the film rights to Peter Benchley's 1974 novel before it was published and became a best-seller lasting 44 weeks on the charts. Composer John Williams earned an Academy Award for his iconic, tension-building original score, and JAWS earned two more Oscars® for Best Editing and Best Sound. JAWS became a pop culture sensation in its 1975 theatrical release, quickly breaking box office records to become the first film to earn over $100 million and the highest-grossing film of its era. Despite its incredibly difficult production on location in Martha's Vineyard, due largely to the mechanical sharks malfunctioning in the salt water seas, the unprecedented success of JAWS launched the careers of its three lead stars into the Hollywood stratosphere and turned young director Spielberg into a big name director in the industry.
JAWS is one of 13 classic Universal films to be digitally remastered and fully restored from 35mm original film elements as part of Universal's ongoing 100th Anniversary celebration. The JAWS restoration began with researching and evaluating the existing film elements to determine the best means to restore the film. Over the course of several months, skilled technicians at Universal Studios Digital Services meticulously balanced color, removed dirt and scratches, and repaired any damage to the film
elements shot by shot and frame by frame. Following the picture restoration, Universal Studios Sound team up-mixed the iconic JAWS soundtrack to DTS-HD Master 7.1, optimizing the sound on the Blu- ray for the latest home theater technology. The entire restoration process was conducted in conjunction with Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment's post-production team to ensure the integrity of Spielberg's original vision remained intact.
